- (1710–73)Historian and Devotional Writer.Butler was orphaned as a child and was educated at the Catholic Seminary at Douai. After ordination, he acted as chaplain to the Duke of Norfolk’s household and travelled abroad a great deal. He is remembered for his monumental Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs and Other Principal Saints which covers the lives of sixteen hundred saints.
